Many times on this blog I have mentioned my Mother. Today, I want to honor her for the delightful and special person that she is. My Mother will be 88 on July 12, 2009.
For the last 5 years, I have had the privilege of having her a part of my life on a daily basis. I left "home" which was in Oxnard, California in 1974. I was in my early 20's with two small children.
From 1974 until 2004, my only contact with my Mama was through weekly phone calls and brief visits. When I left Oxnard, I really left. I have lived in many different parts of the world including the Far East. Until now, I have never lived closer than 3000 miles to her. In 2004, the decision was made for Mama to move east. At that time, she was living completely by herself without the benefit of close family. Her health was failing quickly, she had endured many surgeries, and frequent falls. When she moved to be with me, she did so with a fractured pelvis. We do not share a home, but we do share common condos which are less than 6 ft. apart.
Since 2004, she has continued to progress down the difficult road of the elderly. She has suffered the loss of acute hearing. She has had a knee replacement, and also has suffered acute abdominal surgery. She is allergic to eggs, and therefore can not take the fu shot. Every flu season presents an acute risk. She is currently recovering from Influenza B which progressed to double pneumonia. Even though she has faced death many times, God has always blessed her with recovery.
Although she has suffered many trials, my Mother is totally amazing. She is still very independent, keeping a spotless home. She is a splendid cook and is absolutely current with today's news. She has severe arthritis especially in her hands. She endures untold pain. She works daily exercising her fingers and her legs. In other words, she is astonishing.
Mama has always been generous and giving towards her family, far more so than her family has been to her. She never complains about anything. Her only sadness in life is not living close to her great-grandchildren. Mama is matriarch to a family of two children, seven grandchildren, and eight great-grandchildren. She is absolutely devoted to her family.
I love my Mother. To me, she is the greatest woman who has ever graced this earth. We are on the 100 yr. plan and I will do anything which is required to reach this milestone. I am so blessed to wake everyday to her sparkling green eyes and feisty personality. Everyday we share is a pure gift. I understand that at any moment my Mother's weak heart may stop. But, I don't think about this. I only think about the fun we share, the love we have and the blessing that God has given each of us to share this part of our lives together.
